Espoo Ciné 17.-26.8.2012

Espoo Ciné on vuodesta 1990 alkaen Espoossa järjestetty kansainvälinen elokuvafestivaali, joka järjestetään supisuomalaiseen tapaan suurilta osin vapaaehtoisvoimin. Tänäkin vuonna Cinéä puuhaamassa on 50-70 vapaaehtoistyöntekijää ja tapahtuman järjestäjänä toimii Espoon elokuvajuhlat ry. Helsinkiläisiä seikkailijoita Espooseen kyydittää Kampista lähtevä Ciné-bussi, joten kotiseutumatkailuakaan ei tarvitse niin kovin pelätä.

Kaltaistani tasa-arvointoilijaa, fantasianörttiä ja dokumenttinarkkia Ciné on hemmotellut aina. Tänäkin vuonna festivaaleilla on omat kategoriansa muun muassa sateenkaarielokuville (Pink Zone), dokkareille, lastenelokuville ja eri Euroopan maiden elokuville. Ciné onkin historiansa aikana keskittynyt lähinnä uuteen eurooppalaiseen elokuvaan, vaikka poikkeuksiakin näytöslistasta löytyy.

Ei festareilta tähtiloistoakaan puutu: omista elokuvistaan tulevat kertomaan mm. "Tanskan legendaarisin tuottaja" Peter Aalbæk Jensen sekä saksalainen ohjaaja Hans-Christian Schmid. Festivaalin aikana voi osallistua myös Jensenin pitämään seminaariin sekä katsella ilmaisia elokuvaesityksiä WDC-paviljongissa Helsingin Punavuoressa designpääkaupunkivuoteen liittyen.

Tämän vuoden leffatärppejä on ihan kauhean vaikea valita lähinnä siitä syystä, että kiinnostavia elokuvia on niin paljon. Cinén valikoimassa on tänä vuonna hurjat 111 elokuvaa, jotka esitetään kymmenen päivän aikana keskimäärin kahdesti. Tässä kuitenkin oma täysin puolueellinen valikoimani - jos et ehdi muuta, katso ainakin nämä:

1. Brave / Urhea (Mark Andrews & Brenda Chapman)

Cinén perinteeksi on muodostunut uuden Pixar-elokuvan esittäminen, ja tämänvuotinen Brave vaikuttaa juuri nörttityttökohderyhmälle suunnitellulta. Animaation pääosassa on puna- ja omapäinen kuninkaantytär Merida, joka käyttelee jousta kätevästi ja uhmaa perinteitä. Skottiaksentin ystäville luvassa on vajaa parituntinen eargasm.

2. Poulet aux prunes / Chicken with Plums (Marjane Satrapi & Vincent Paronnaud)
Sarjakuvanörtti minussa fanittaa Marjane Satrapia armottomasti, joten tämä leffa on must see -osastoa. Satrapi on iranilaissyntyinen nainen ja sarjakuvataiteilija, jonka tuotantoon itse tutustuin Persepolis-nimisen, Satrapin omaa lapsuutta käsittelevän sarjakuvaromaanin myötä. Poulet aux prunes perustuu Satrapin samannimiseen sarjakuvaan ja on formaatiltaan osittain perinteistä elokuvaa ja osittain animaatiota.

3. Elokuvan matka kuuhun -kaksoisnäytös / A Cinematic Trip to the Moon
Curiosityn matka Marsiin on täydellinen tausta tälle historialliselle tuplanäytännölle. Legendaarinen Georges Mélièsin tieteiselokuva Le voyage dans la Lune (Matka kuuhun) esitettiin ensimmäistä kertaa restauroidussa muodossaan viime vuoden Cannesin elokuvajuhlilla. Tämä alunperin vuonna 1902 tehty värielokuva löydettiin vasta hiljattain lähes toivottomasti tuhoutuneena, mutta sankarirestauroijat työskentelivät 18 vuotta palauttaakseen elokuvan entiseen loistoonsa. Jokaisen scifidiggarin tulee nähdä tämä elokuva. Leffan ensimmäisen näytöksen ääniraidoittaa livenä hillitön Cleaning Women, joten näytös on taatusti uniikki. Ennen näytöksiä esitetään Serge Brombergin ja Eric Langen dokumentti Le voyage Extraordinaire, joka kertoo restauroinnin sankaritarinan.

4. Les Invisibles / Näkymättömät (Sébastien Lifshitz)

Sateenkaariosastoa edustaa dokumentti maailmansotien välillä syntyneistä naisista ja miehistä, jotka henkensä uhalla pysyivät ulkona kaapista. Jos haluat nähdä todellista rohkeutta, katso tämä dokkari.

5. Harold's Going Stiff (Keith Wright)
Luulitko että zombieista on jo otettu kaikki irti? Väärin! Brittihuumorin ja epäkuolleiden ystäviä hemmotellaan Méliès d'Argent -fantasiaelokuvakilpailuun osallistuvalla elokuvalla herttaisesta vanhuksesta, josta tulee herttainen zombie.

Misfits - antisankarit haalareissa

Huom! Tästä Misfits-sarjan esittelystä piti tulla innokkaan fanin puffaus sarjan julkaisuista ja vinkkaus seurata uutta neljättä kautta, mutta viikko ennen bloggauksen julkaisupäivää sain kuulla että Misfits onkin tulossa tv:stä syyskuun alusta lähtien. Upeaa toimintaa Yleltä Doctor Who -uusintojen jälkeen! Parempi näin, todellakin! 

Alisha, Curtis, Kelly, Nathan ja Simon.

- What if we are meant to be, like, superheroes?
- You lot, superheroes? No offence, but in what kind of fucked-up world would that be allowed to happen?

Räävi ja hersyvä tv-sarja populaarikulttuurin kyllästämille nuorille aikuisille; tästä syystä Misfitsiä (2009– ) on siteerattu Heroesin ja Skinsin ristisiitokseksi Buffyn huumorintajulla. On kuitenkin pakko huomauttaa, että vaikka sarja onkin Iso-Britanniasta, ja sisältää ripauksen scifi-maailmaa, se ei ole lapsille soveltuva tai kiltti kuin Doctor Who. Eräs sarjaan tutustuttamani sanoikin sarjaa yllättävän rääviksi ja tätä arvostelua kirjoittaessani jouduin varmistamaan Nörttityttöjen blogiryhmältä, miten “aikuismateriaaliin” pitäisi suhtautua. Sarja sisältää rutkasti kiroilua, huumeiden viihdekäyttöä, verta, väkivaltaa ja tietenkin vielä seksiä: Suomessa lähetysikäraja on K-16, joten tässä varoitukset lukijoille mitä on tulossa. Itsetarkoituksellinen mässäily tylsistyttää yllättävän nopeasti ja Misfitsissä ei onneksi ole kyse siitä. Tämä ollut minulle pahin aikuisiän fanitussarja sitten Angelin, ennen Tohtoria ja Torchwoodia, mopon karkaaminen kunnolla käsistä ei ollut kovinkaan kaukana.

Nämä eivät ole työtrikoot.

Misfits on lähtökuvioltaan melko yksioikoinen: joukko nuoria aikuisia joutuu laittamaan oranssit työhaalarit päälle yhdyskuntapalvelun merkeissä (suurimmalla osalla on lisäksi ASBO, Anti-Social Behaviour Order, rangaistus jolla ojennetaan paheksuttavasta käytöksestä), ensimmäisen työpäivän aikana salamoivan myrskyn yhteydessä jokainen saa "supervoiman", joka liittyy jollain tavalla hahmon persoonallisuuteen. 

Pissismäinen Kelly (Lauren Socha), joka on ylihuolehtivainen toisten mielipiteistä, saa telepaattiset voimat. Huumeiden hallussapidosta kiinni jäänyt pikajuoksijalupaus Curtis (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) pystyy siirtymään ajassa taaksepäin. Kevytkenkäinen ja hemmoteltu Alisha (Antonia Thomas) huomaa yhtäkkiä saavansa kosketuksen voimalla kenen tahansa pasmat täysin sekaisin. Piinallisen ujo ja estynyt Simon (Iwan Rheon) pystyy muuttumaan näkymättömäksi ja mitään häpeämätön moottoriturpa Nathan (Robert Sheehan) ei näytä saaneen mitään näkyviä voimia. 

Ainoa oranssi vaatekaappale, jonka huolisin kaappiini.

Kenellekään uudet voimat eivät tuo valtaa, tiukkoja trikoita tai muuttumista lepakkokartanon oloneuvokseksi: oranssit haalarit on kiskottava niskaan joka aamu vaikka voimat tuntuvat vain tuovan lisää ongelmia. Lisäksi nuorten yhteiskuntapalveluksen valvojilla tuntuu olevan vaikeuksia pysyä elossa, ukkosmyrsky on tehnyt tepposet muihinkin ympärillä oleviin ihmisiin. Sarja ei kulje massiivisten spoilerien voimalla, mutta niiden vältteleminen parantaa melkoisesti yllätysmomenttien tehoa ja katseluelämystä.

Sarjaa on tehty tällä hetkellä kolme kautta ja neljäs on tulossa Iso-Britanniassa loppusyksystä. Sarjan luoja Howard Overman on samaa sukua Joss Whedonin ja Russell T Daviesin kanssa siinä mielessä, että populaarikulttuuriviittaukset lentelevät tiuhaan ja faniyhteisöä vuorotellen itketetään ja vihastutetaan anteeksipyytelemättömillä hahmokuvioilla. Sarjan huumori on alleviivaavan rääviä (toistan tätä tarkoituksella!) ja jotkut hahmot välillä luupäisen rasittavia, mutta silti kokonaisuus on tähän mennessä ollut onnistunutta tunteiden ääripäiden vuoristorataa kaikilla kausilla. 

Minne kiire, Alisha?

Kaksi ensimmäistä kautta ovat ehdottoman suositeltavia ja kolmas kausi on sekin ihan katsottava, muttei yhtä naseva kuin aiemmat kaudet. Isoin ero kolmannen ja edeltävien kausien välillä on fanien rakastaman Nathanin jääminen pois, vaikka tilalle tullut Rudy (Joseph Gilgun) on täysin Nathanin tyhjiön täyttävä mielipuoli. 

Odotan itse neljännen kauden alkamista innokkaasti vaihdoksista huolimatta, Skins-teinisarjan tyyli vaihtaa koko hahmokaarti muutaman kauden välein saattaaa olla ihan toimiva ratkaisu. Lisukkeena uuden kauden odotteluun ovat edellisinä kausina mielenkiintoisesti rakennetut hahmojen Twitter-tilit, joissa jaksojen pyöriessä hahmot elivät omaa elämäänsä fanien kanssa välillä keskustellen. Sarjan musiikeista kootut Spotify-listat muistuttavat erinomaisesti, miksi sarjaa jaksaa myös kuunnella, sävelletyn musiikin lisäksi lisenssikappaleet ovat nappivalintoja.

Kakkoselta alkavia ensimmäisiä kausia (joissa on yllättävän vähän jaksoja: kuusi, seitsemän ja kahdeksan) odotan vähän sekavissa merkeissä, luonnollisesti sarjassa jossa hahmot puhuvat paitsi nuorisokieltä sekä vahvoilla murteilla tekstityksen laatu saattaa olla ratkaiseva miten sarjan sisältöä ymmärtää. Etenkin Kellyn paksu chav-englanti on huumorin kohteena jo itsessään, toivon vain ettei sitä käännetä sanasta sanaan vaikka stadin slangiksi! Ongelmana saattavat olla myös runsaslukuiset, ihanat brittikirosanat, joiden vastineiden etsiminen Suomen kielestä on tuskaisen epätoivoista touhua. The Avengers -elokuvassa olleen Lokin herrasmieskirosanan tunnistaneet varmasti ymmärtävät ongelman luonteen. 

Uskallan suositella Misfitsia melkein kaikille, jotka eivät pelästy sarjan särmäistä luonnetta ja mustaa huumoria, kiiltokuvamaisuus on hiekkapaperilla hiottu yhtä tyylikkääksi kuin tapahtumaympäristönä olevat betonilähiöt. Vähän samantyylisellä kentällä liikkuvia elokuvia Misfitsin kanssa ovat esimerkiksi supersankariparodiat Super ja Kick-Ass, sekä vakavahenkisempi Chronicle. En edes yritä välttää kliseiden lausumista, sarja on täyttä klassikkoainesta ja silkkaa mannaa nörttikatsojille.

Nörttityttö-TV kesäisissä conitunnelmissa

Nörttityttöjen yhteisömanageri Nina Niskanen debytoi Nörttityttö-TV:n haastattelijana Finnconissa 2012. Ninan ensimmäinen haastateltava (ikinä) oli conin kunniavieras, kirjailija Lois McMaster Bujold. Bujold paljastui sydämelliseksi ja mukavaksi ihmiseksi ja Nina suoriutui esikoishaastattelustaan erinoimaisesti.

Nina ja Lois juttelevat muun muassa Loisin tuotannosta ja suunnitelmista tulevien kirjojen suhteen sekä kirjoittamisesta yleensä. Lois muun muassa tarjoaa käytännön vinkkejä aloitteleville kirjailijoille. Nina poimi haastatteluun myös Geek Women Unite!(Finland)-yhteisön ehdottamia kysymyksiä.

Videon kuvasi Jari Iso-Markku. Vähäisestä editoinnista ja yleisestä tuotannollisesta hössöttelystä vastaa Nörttityttöjen toinen yhteisömanageri Anitta Kiviranta. Nörttityttö-TV kiittää Lois McMaster Bujoldia, Finnconin 2012 coniteaa, Indierentalsia ja Radio Robin Hoodia.

Ensiviikolla Nörttityttö-TV julkaisee lisää Finnconissa taltioituja videoita. Luvassa on (toivottavasti) ainakin kirjailija Liz Williamsin ja tutkija Irma Hirsjärven haastattelut. Tsekkaa myös aiemmin julkaisemamme Finncon-video, jossa Nina, Anitta ja Minna fiilistelevät conikokemuksiaan.

Nörttityttö-TV oli paikalla myös Suomen suurimmassa roolipelitapahtumassa, Espoon Dipolissa järjestetyssä Ropeconissa. Lyhyen conikatsauksen toteutti Anna-Maija "Maija" Laine.

Nörttitytöt tykkää Myrskyn sankareista

Myrskyn sankarit on suomenkielinen helposti lähestyttävä roolipeli 9-13-vuotiaille. Ideana on luoda roolipeli, jonka kautta uuden sukupolven on kävevä päästä roolipeliharrastuksen makuun. Roolipelin toteuttaminen ei kuitenkaan ole ilmaista puuhaa, ja niinpä pelisuunnittelija Mike Pohjola kerääkin parasta aikaa yleisöltä projektilleen rahoitusta osoitteessa indiegogo.com/myrskynsankarit . Osarahoittajille on luvassa maukkaita palkintoja, mikäli peliprojekti saadaan toteutettua. Myrskyn sankarit on tarkoitus julkaista vuoden 2013 Ropeconissa.

Nörttitytöt on mukana tukemassa Myrskyn sankarit -projektia ja sen varainkeruuta. Vastineeksi Mike Pohjola on luvannut Nörttitytöille, että peliin kirjoitetaan vahvoja ja aktiivisia naishahmoja. Haluamme yhdessä varmistaa, että uuden sukupolven nörttitytöille löytyy samaistuttavaksi muitakin rooleja kuin pelastettavan prinsessan osa. Jatkossa Nörttitytöt myös testaa Myrskyn sankarit soveltuvalla nörttityttäristä ja äideistä koostuvalla ryhmällä - ja tietysti raportoi testipelikokemuksista Nörttitytöt-blogissa.

Nörttityttöjen kirjoittajat kokoamaan keskuudestaan mahdollisimman mukavan summan Myrskyn sankareiden rahoitukseen - tähtäämme yhdessä ainakin Morgana le Fey -tason lahjoitukseen. Käytännön syistä olemme päätyneet siihen, että lahjoitamme itse kukin rahaa Myrskyn sankareille yksityishenkilöinä, mutta kannustaaksemme toisiamme pidämme yhdessä kirjaa siitä, kuinka paljon olemme yhteensä lahjoittaneet.

Myös sinulla on mahdollisuus tulla mukaan tekemään kotimaista roolipelihistoriaa ja tukea Myrskyn sankareita sopivaksi katsomallasi summalla. Huomaa, että esimerkiksi 25 dollarin lahjoituksella varmistat itsellesi oman Myrskyn sankarit -pelipaketin. Jos et itse ole ropettaja, tässäpä vaikka loistava joululahjaidea vuoden 2013 pukinkonttiin.

Myrskyn sankarit -projekti herätti keskustelua Nörttityttöjen kirjoittajaryhmässä viime viikolla. Ensin jaettiin Indiegogo-linkkiä ja innostettiin muita osallistumaan projektin rahoitukseen, mutta jo pian heräsi spekulaatio siitä, miten "nörttityttöystävällinen" suunnittelilla oleva peli mahtaa olla. Mike Pohjola ehtikin jo ilmaista pelin sivuilla, että myös tyttöpelaajat pyritään ottamaan huomioon Myrskyn sankareiden suunnittelussa. Nörttitytöt päättivät kuitenkin lähestyä maestro Pohjolaa vielä henkilökohtaisesti tarjoutua yhteistyöhön.

Mainittakoon, että Myrskyn sankarit -keskustelun sivujuonteena Nörttitytöt pohtivat nyt yhdistyksen perustamista, jotta meidän olisi jatkossa helpompi kerätä rahaa Myrskyn sankareiden kaltaisiin oivallisiin avustuskohteisiin. Päätöstä yhdistyksen perustamisesta ei vielä kuitenkaan ole tehty. Tällä kertaa toteutamme käytännön syistä keksinäisen varainkeruumme niin, että itse kukin käy tekemässä yksityislahjoituksen Indiegogon sinäänsä loistavasti toimivalla rahoitussivulla.

Myrskyn sankareiden Indiegogo-sivulla on loistavasti tietoa projektin taustoista ja päämääristä. Sivulla on muun muassa eritelty, mihin projektiin kerätyt rahat tullaan käyttämään. Lähinnä on kyse pelin painokustannuksista - pelityöryhmän palkkoihin Indiegogon rahoista ei käytetä penniäkään, sillä tiimi on mukana lähinnä rakkaudesta roolipeleihin.

Myrskyn sankareiden mainitaan ammentavan vaikutteita ainakin Robin Hoodista, Kuningas Arthurin tarinoista, Narniasta, Tähtien sodasta ja Hiidenpadasta. Tämän listan äärellä varmasti herahtaa vesi kielellä jokaiselle tosinörtille. Lapsille suunnatun kotimaisen roolipelin tarpeesta Pohjola sanailee seuraavasti: "Kun minä olin nuori, oli saatavilla suomenkielisiä fantasiaroolipelejä, jotka oli suunnattu ensikertalaisille. Kokonainen sukupolvi aloitti ropettamaan punalaatikko-D&D:llä. Nyt aloittamaan pääsee vain, jos ymmärtää puhelinluettelon oloisen englanninkielisen sääntökirjan. Haluan, että Ropeconissa 2013 julkaistaan yhteisön rahoittama suomenkielinen 9-13-vuotiaille suunnattu pöytäroolipeli, jossa on paljon siistiä seikkailumeininkiä, ja joka innostaa uuden sukupolven roolipelaamaan." Onkin huomattavaa, että Myrskyn sankareiden rahoittajat ovat mukana tukemassa paitsi suomalaista roolipelikulttuuria myös lasten ja nuorten kulttuuria ylipäätään. Tasokkaita varhaisnuorille suunnattuja pelejä ei ole koskaan liikaa.

Varaton nörtti voi tukea projektia myös jakamalla siitä tietoa kavereilleen Facebookissa, Twitterissä ja niin edes päin tai esimerkiksi puhumalla paikallisen pelikaupan, kirjaston tai peruskoulun tilaamaan ennakkopelistä oman kappaleensa. Toisaalta viiden euron lahjoitus irtoaa jo pienestäkin nörttibudjetista.

Tässä se nyt on! Ihka ensimmäinen Nörttityttö-TV-pätkä eli videopodcast Finnconista. Teknisessä laadussa on vähän parantamisen varaa - video jökkii paikoitellen toistaiseksi editoijaparalle tuntemattomasta syystä, mutta pyrin paikkaamaan ongelman myöhempiin Finncon-pätkiin. Lisää kuvaa Finnconista on siis luvassa lähitulevaisuudessa.

Tässä pätkässä Nina Niskanen, Minna Heimola ja minä jutustelemme Finnconin päätteeksi vähän siitä, mitä conissa tulikaan nähtyä ja koettua. Minna hehkuttaa erityisesti kirjailija Lois McMaster Bujoldia, joka oli conissa kunniavieraana. Ninalta taas tenttasin miltä "conineitsyydestä" luopuminen Nörttityttöjen seurassa on tuntunut.

Sweaty and wasted from screaming, but it was fun!

Greetings from high up in the air! We are on our way back home and suffering from jet lag, so apologies if this text makes no sense at times.

After surviving the floods, whirlwind, rattlesnakes, scorpions and tarantella eating wasps of the desert, we headed to the more safe areas of San Diego. Located close to the Mexican border, our GPS navigator decided to go on a tirading rampage and directed us to people's private yards and other very embarassing places. But other than that, we can highly recommend the GPS navigator we bought: the cheapest Tom Tom they carried in Target. (Just make sure it has lane changing aid.)

San Diego Zoo

My experiences of the San Diego Zoo have been prior to this visit limited to the reality TV show on the zoo which came out many years ago. The show followed the animal caretakers and from it I got the impression the San Diego Zoo is a huge, high quality zoo. Correct. San Diego Zoo is one of the top zoos in the world and houses many rare animals and is an active participant in many programs designed to reintroduce near extinct animals back to nature.

On the being huge part, there are bus routes within the zoo you can take. Also the map gives you the impression this area is huge. We both looked at the map and made a list of all the must see animals and tried to plan on which bus stops to use, etc... but it was totally unnecessary. The zoo is actually, for a normal Finnish person used to walking, a large but in no way overwhelming place. We ended up visiting each and every animnal in the zoo, not needing the bus even once and even had time to spend over half an hour looking at the elephants getting fed. We spent about six to eight hours in the zoo and never felt we had to hurry and even had time to stop for a proper dinner even though we are those people who have to stop to look at every animal no matter how (un)interesting they are.

I must also praise the zoo for taking care of its customers. There were restrooms, restaurants, cafes and stores everywhere. In places they even had moving walkways to help you take shortcuts or climb uphill. The only problem was, the zoo is a labyrinth where you can get lost quite easily. There are a few main streets and from them you can enter routes named after a theme or some popular animals on that route. The only problem is the signs don't give you a clear indication on the direction you need to take and in the middle, around a huge bird house, the routes go on many levels and at least we got hopelessly lost trying to find the hippos. But no worries, in the end we did find them, though I still have no idea how.

And as for the animals, which are the main attraction of the place. What can I say: <3 .

It looks graceful in this photo, but in reality it was quite scary to watch.
Mostly it just slid down the trees and fell down from places, requiring minimum energy to get down. Weird animals.

After Berlin Zoo a swore I would never go to see orangutans again. I just cried my eyes out there. Here the orangutans looked less depressed but just as bored, except for this little guy here who was doing all the tricks from they monkeying book to ward off the boredom. The others just lied there or rolled around the cage being very, very bored. I hope there would have been some way for me to make their day a bit more exciting. I really don't like intelligent animals such as these held in cages without stimulation.

San Diego Comic Con 2012

Right at the same time we were in San Diego there was the famous Comic Con. Unfortunately the tickets had sold out in 15 minutes and we missed even the second sale so there was no way for us to get in. We hoped there would have been some events in the city arount the Comic Con, but apparently not. Many of the comic stores were open at regular hours and some had even closed their doors. But the ones we visited we bought empty.

La Brea Tar Pits

Yeah, you read that right, it's a... tar pit. But don't go waving the fail flag quite yet, because it's not just any old tar pit. This one is located right in the middle of Los Angeles and holds the remains of many millions of animals from before the last ice age! They have found many extinct animals from the pits like sabre-toothed cats, mammoths, and these huge giant ground sloths, which resemble modern bears. As they remind the visitors many, many times, there are no dinosaurs there, because the pits were formed only after the dinosaurs had died.

The La Brea Tar Pits is a free public park and in the middle of it there is the Page museum which displays some of the many findings from the tar pits. The most interesting part is, the tar pits are still being excavated and in the park there are many old excavation sites. Pit 91 is currently under excavation and there are paleonthologists working there in front of the park visitors. The excavations are made very visitor friendly. In the public park excavation site they have a white board with explanations of what the paleonthologists are doing currently and what findings they have made on that particular day. The tar pits are so full of remains the list of the daily findings was long already by midday. And inside the museum there is an open aquarium type of research lab for all the findings where the phaleontologists clean up and do the inventory on all the findings and also put together skeletons when needed. When we visited, there were two full time paleonthologists there and almost a hundred volunteers occasionally helping them with the finds.

By the way, if you are interested and happen to be staying in the area, they are accepting more volunteers. In fact all the museums and the zoos we visited had a volunteer program. I only wish we had a similar system in Finland, since accepting volunteers does not only help you get valuable work experience but it also involves people with the museums and, of course, allows the museums to make better exhibitions with less money. I would imagine the cultural historical museum of Finland would greatly benefit from volunteers considering how little money they have compared to the more popular art museums, which also get sponsors more easily. It's like a snowball effect, the less money you have, the less time and money you have to put together exhibitions which interest a wider public, and the less visitiors you get, which causes you to get less money.

The La Brea Tar Pits museum (Page museum) is a rather small museum, but very interesting and with well thought out displays. But just the park is worth the visit. You see, in the past the park used to have many ponds or tar pits, where animals got stuck. First it might have been a herbivore, then a carnivore thinking it found an easy meal, then flies and what not. The tar pits in the area are full of bones and shells. And the best part is, there is a large pond right next to the road which, to my understanding, is just like the ponds in the park in the past. The tar under the park is still oozing through the ground and there are places where it has formed bubbling puddles. There's tar floating in the pond and quite likely the whole bottom of the pond is filled with tar. The place might not be the best place for a picnic because you might accidentally place your blanket on tar and the smell of tar is quite strong in the park.

Disneyland

Who hasn't read about Disneyland in their childhood from Aku Ankka ("Donald Duck" in Finnish, ridiculously popular institution in Finnish families) magazine! Around the age of ten I got a chance to visit the place and it ruined childhood for me. Linnanmäki was nothing compared to Disneyland and I stopped visiting the place. Dangerous!

Of course, since we were around we had to visit the place. Maybe we were bit scared if the long lines for all the attracations would take their toll and if we had outgrown the place. We happened to enter the park on its birthday so the place was packed full to make matters worse. But the good thing is, none of it mattered to us in the end.

Yes, there were long lines. I'm talking about 1,5 hour long lines to the most popular attractions. But the best part was, most of the places had been designed in a way that you couldn't see the full length of the line, which miraculously made the wait much more tolerable, and in almost all the places the queue was placed within the set, making even the queueing part of the experience. Also the most popular attractions have a FastPass system which means that instead of queueing you can go to a machine, stick your ticket in and it gives you a ticket which allows you to go past the lines between a certain time. It won't allow you to pass the line completely but you will skip most of it. Note, you can get only one FastPass per two hours or so and the FastPasses run out during the day. So a smart visitor goes to the most popular places first and gets their FastPasses well in advance.

And as for the rest of the people, even they didn't bother us that much, since the park is so huge there was no rush except during parades or other special program within the park. As for parking, bying tickets, getting in - I don't think I have ever had so easy time getting anywhere including my own bed. And even the food they serve in Disneyland is good. Despite the long lines I can't think of anything bad to say about the place. Very good job, guys!

Since Disneyland is a definite ***** we decided to rate the rides we took.

• Pirates of the Caribbean *****
• The movies with the same name are based on this classic ride. It's long, it has a great mood, it's quite a lot of fun and also gives you a good scream in the beginning. :D *****
• Haunted Mansion *****
• Another one of the classic rides and propably the best spooky ride there is. It's not necessarily scary, though I did scream in the cemetary, but it's so wonderfully made you can't but wonder how they did all that.
• Jungle Cruise ***
• This ride possibly got its inspiration from the Jungle Book, but it has nothing to do with the story. In fact, I think they might have redone the otherwise very old fashioned boatride into a comedy show. It's up to your captain how much fun you'll have, but even if you get a bad one at least you get to see how "amusement" was done in my childhood. 
• Splash Mountain *****
• When opened, I think this was the tallest fall in any splash rides anywhere. The best part is, when you begin the ride, it's cute and fluffy, but as you get closer to the fall the images get more and more horrifying - actually it's downright weird by modern standards, they've got cute and fluffy animals dying and stuff. And when you're at the top of the fall, you can't see the bottom! That tall.
• Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters ****
• An arcade game style ride where you shoot evil aliens who are trying to steal batteries or something from Buzz Lightyear. Surprise fun!
• Matterhorn Bobsleds **
• Old ride, not that scary. Screamed only because I was expecting something worse (better).
• Star Tours *****
• A must see! The idea is that you're going on a vacation in the Star Wars world, as anyone in the galaxy far, far away might, but then things turn out rather more exciting than planned. We can't tell you anything more without spoiling it, but it's based on the original Star Wars movies and it's so much fun! And even the queueing is made fun.
• Space Mountain ***
• Possibly the wildest and fastest ride in Disneyland, where you ride a rocket in the darkness of the space. The most horrifying part is when you just get a faint feeling of how fast you are going and it's something totally horrifying. But the lines are horrifying. They were 1,5 hours long and even with FastPass they are 45 minutes long. And it's the only place where the line runs in the most boring environment, in straight angles. Booooring!
• Captain Eo Tribute *****
• This is the first ever 4D movie starring young Michael Jackson and directed by George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola. It is a wonderful little piece of magic, which has turned much funnier with the passing of time and especially since the early 80s cutting edge style is just so unbelievably hilarious. The worst part is, the movie print is in bad shape, or the transition from those red-and-blue 3D glasses to the polarised 3D glasses hasn't been a complete success. Also the movie is missing the original's laser and starfield effects, which might have been pretty cool. We read from the internet they are thinking about pulling the movie from the theater and making something new there instead. That would be a shame, but I understand they don't want to keep on showing something that isn't pulling people in. Maybe they could still show the original Captain Eo once or twice a day with the possible new show, because it would be a shame if no-one could ever see this movie again. (It has never been released on video or DVD. It's only been shown once on MTV.)
• Big Thunder Mountain Railroad *****
• *SCREEEEeeaaaaaaaaam!* *laughter* *SCREEeeeeaaam!* *laughter* We lost our voices.
• Indiana Jones Adventure *****
• The scariest, best, most exciting ride ever! The lines are long and a little bit boring, but still well worth the effort.
• Snow White's Scary Adventures *
• We spent some time in Fantasyland,which is designed for smaller kids, before braving the line for Space Mountain. This one is one of those very old rides, where the only excitement comes from trying to understand the story the scenes are trying to tell when it's been too long since you read the Disney version of Snow White and scenes chosen for the ride are a bit random. It ends very abruptly, too.
• Mr. Toad's Wild Ride ***** 
• Like Snow White, but fun! I steered us through walls and fireplaces, ended up getting thrown to the jail, and ended up in Hell. 
• (Remember to use the steering wheel enthusiastically and get into the story!)
• Mad Tea Party ***
• Tea cups going around and you can make them go faster and we did. Couldn't walk straight or at all for a few minutes.

Finishing words and expert tips

Writing this entry from home one thing strikes us: how quiet everything is back home. There is no humming sound of the air conditioning and the sounds from a close by freeway. The comfort of your own shower not trying to rip your skin off is nice, too. But I miss the massaging shower ends which worked magic on my shouders.

The top memories from the trip are the amazing sceneries everywhere: at mountains, on the coast, in the desert and everywhere in-between. In one hour of driving the vegetation changes and you are continually bombarded with new rock formations. Our tip is to stay off the huge freeways and stick on the smaller roads. Also if you have a chance, keep the daily travel distances short. We had planned to drive from two to four hours per day and we still just barely had the time to see everything we wanted. You do want to stop at all view points and want to have time to walk around the small towns you see on your way. And you also need time to recover so reserve at least one day per week when you don't drive anywhere.

Also huge thanks for the amazing journey go to TripAdvisor.com. We booked our motels mostly from Hotels.com, but making an additional quality check from TripAdvisor we found the best and the cheapest motels in the area, and the best cheap restaurants everywhere. Only twice did we end up staying in a bad motel and both times we knew they might be bit shaky. Also remember to add your own reviews there!

We found the GPS navigation indispensable. You might be okay outside of the big cities without one, if you really want to adventure, but we wouldn't venture into the inner cities without one.

Parking is very easy everywhere. There is generally free or cheap ($5-15) parking available within a block of anywhere you want to go. Only in the most popular downtown areas you might end up paying more than you're comfortable with, and even then if you're willing to walk a couple of blocks, it's okay.

There are some traffic laws that work differently from Finland, be sure to check them out before driving. The big ones are that it's usually okay to turn right on red, if you check to see it's clear, and passing can be done on either side of the vehicle. Be on the lookout for stops, which are a very common way of regulating traffic in intersections. They mean an all the way stop, too. Four-way stops can be confusing, but basically you just take turns in order of approach.

As for financing your road trip, we ended up spending around 1'000 € per week including gas (c. 250 € per week), food ($50 per day on food and drinks), motels (c. $60 per night), restaurants and attractions (the main ones costing $80 per head). On top of that we paid 850 € for my flights and 1'000 € for six weeks' car rental.

All in all, a great journey. Six weeks went by so fast it's unbelievable. And at the same time it feels like a dream, thinking back from our trusty old home sofa.

Lois McMaster Bujold, Miles Vorkosigan ja Finncon

Lois McMaster Bujold on yhdysvaltalainen scifi- ja fantasiakirjailija, joka on juuri nyt ajankohtainen, sillä hän on tänä viikonloppuna kunniavieraana Tampereella Finnconissa. Moneen otteeseen Hugo- ja Nebula-palkintoja teoksistaan saanut Bujold on kirjoittanut sekä scifiä että fantasiaa, mutta tässä tekstissäni keskityn jatkossa oman (ja usean muunkin) fanitukseni keskeisimpään kohteeseen, ns. Vorkosigan-sarjaan.

Spoiler alert: tarkoitukseni ei ole tehdä liikaa paljastuksia yksittäisten kirjojen juonista saati loppuratkaisuista, mutta kirjasarjan henkilöistä ja teemoista on yllättäen aika hankala kirjoittaa paljastamatta mitään. Jos olet aivan äärettömän spoileriherkkä, niin hyppää viimeiseen kappaleeseen ja mene sitten lukemaan suoraan ne kirjat :)

Bujoldin novelli- ja esseekokoelman Dreamweaver's Dilemma esipuheessa kirjailija Lillian Stewart Carl, Bujoldin pitkäaikainen ystävä, kuvaa hänen ja Loisin yhteistä lapsuutta ja nuoruutta - nörttityttöinä Ohiossa. Anekdootit paitsi kirjoittamisesta, myös Star Trek -faniudesta, scifistä, coneista, lopussa mainituista roolipeleistä ja asemasta "outona" tekevät selväksi, että Bujold (ja Carl) ovat pitkän linjan nörttityttöjä par excellence. Heille oli tärkeää, että Star Trekissä oli myös naishahmoja - olkoonkin, että nämä jäivät vielä paljolti miespäähenkilöiden varjoon. 


Omissa Vorkosigan-sarjan teoksissaan Bujold onkin aloittanut maailmansa kuvaamisen nimenomaan naisnäkökulmasta; sarjan aloittavissa(*) kahdessa kirjassa tapahtumat on kuvattu kapteeni Cordelia Naismithin näkökulmasta. Vaikka sarjan myöhemmissä osissa päähenkilö on enimmäkseen kapteeni Naismithin poika Miles Naismith Vorkosigan, on yksi sarjan kantavia teemoja eri syistä poikkeavien ja/tai marginalisoitujen hahmojen nousu ylivoimaisiltakin vaikuttavia esteitä vastaan. 

Miles Vorkosigan on fyysisesti vammainen ja lyhytkasvuinen fyysiseen heikkouteen äärettömän kielteisesti suhtautuvassa militantissa yhteiskunnassa. Kirjojen keskeisiin hahmoihin kuuluu samaisessa patriarkaalisessa yhteiskunnassa usein mitätöityjen naisten lisäksi erilaisten seksuaali- ja sukupuolivähemmistöjen edustajia sekä erilaisten eettisesti kyseenalaisten lääketieteellisten kokeiden seurauksena syntyneitä poikkeavia yksilöitä. Vaikka kirjat ovat sinänsä kevyttä luettavaa, monien näistä vähitellen elämänsä subjekteiksi nousevien hahmojen tausta on hyvinkin rankka ja traaginen. Kenties tämä näkökulma ja teema onkin yksi syy teosten suureen suosioon "outoina" ja marginalisoituina pidettyjen nörttien keskuudessa.

Yleisesti Bujoldin Vorkosigan-saaga luokitellaan scifin sisällä avaruusoopperan alagenreen, ja genren tuntomerkit, kuten ihmissuhteiden keskeisyys ja toiminnan usein eeppinen skaala, täsmäävätkin mielestäni hyvin sarjaan. Hahmojen väliset rakkaus-, perhe- ja ystävyyssuhteet ovat teossarjan suola ja sokeri, ja kirjojen hahmojen välillä on virkistävän monipuolisia, helppoja stereotypisointeja uhmaavia suhteita. Mitä tulee toiminnan eeppiseen skaalaan, Miles Vorkosigan on kotiplaneettansa Barrayarin suuren miehen, sijaishallitsijana ja pääministerinä toimineen sotasankari Aral Vorkosiganin poika, ja hänen seikkailunsa vaikuttavat usein korkealla tasolla planeettojen ja valtakuntien välisiin suhteisiin.

Tämä tapahtumien taso nostaa samalla kiinnostavasti esiin eri maailmojen väliset kulttuurierot. Bujold tuntuu olevan varsin kiinnostunut gender-kysymyksistä, ja nimenomaan eri planeettojen erilaiset käytännöt naisten aseman, parinmuodostuksen ja perheen perustamisen suhteen nousevat esille toistuvasti teossarjassa; joskus eksplisiittisestikin teoksen henkilöiden analysoimana, kuten omassa suosikissani A Civil Campaign, mutta sitäkin useammin taustalla kulttuurieroihin ja hahmojen toimintaan vaikuttavina tekijöinä. Vorkosigan-saaga ei silti toki ole pelkkää pariutumiseen keskittyvää ns. chicklit -kirjallisuutta, vaan yhtä lailla Bujold kuvaa tarkasti ja mielenkiintoisesti eri kulttuurien historiaa, teknologiaa, yhteiskunnallisia rakenteita ja talouttakin. Sen sijaan uskonnollisia teemoja teoksissa käsitellään yllättävänkin vähän, lukuunottamatta Cordelia Naismithin silloin tällöin ilmaisemaa uskoa Jumalaan.

Ei liene yllättävää, että innokkaana fanina suosittelen lämpämästi tarttumaan sarjaan, jos se ei ole jo tuttu. Joitakin potentiaalisia lukijoita sarjan pituus saattaa epäilyttää, mutta kun innostus herää, se ei yleensä haittaa, päinvastoin :) Yleisesti sarjan loppupuolen teoksia pidetään fanien keskuudessa parempina kuin ihan ensimmäisiä, mutta kaikki ovat lukemisen arvoisia. Itse suosittelen aloittamaan Vorkosigan-tarinan kronologisesta alusta, Shards of Honorista, ja jatkamaan siitä eteenpäin. Jos kuitenkin haluaa hypätä keskeltä mukaan, tai vain testata, pitäisikö Bujoldin teoksista, suosittelen hankkimaan käsiinsä osan Borders of Infinity (löytyy ainakin tällä hetkellä myös ilmaisena pdf:nä täältä!). Siinä on kolme pienoisromaanin mittaista Milesin seikkailua, jotka ovat keskenään varsin eri tyyppisiä, ja valottavat monella tavalla teosten teemoja ja eri alagenrejä.

Kuten alussa totesin, Lois McMaster Bujold on alkavana viikonloppuna (20.-22.7) kunniavieraana Finncon-tapahtumassa Tampereella. Itselleni Bujold on ensisijainen syy suunnata tapahtumaan, mutta tapahtumassa on myös runsaasti muuta nähtävää. Muut kunniavieraat ovat englantilainen scifi- ja fantasiakirjailija Liz Williams sekä suomalainen scifin ja fandomin tutkija, FT Irma Hirsjärvi - nörttityttöjä jonkin määritelmän mukaan siis kaikki :-) Myös kunniavieraisiin suoraan liittymätöntä spekulatiivista fiktiota käsittelevää ohjelmaa on runsaasti. Tarkemmat tiedot ohjelmasta ja tapahtuman käytännön järjestelyistä löytyvät luonnollisesti Finnconin omilta sivuilta.

Nörttitytöt ovat myös mukana Finnconissa. Kuvaamme Finnconissa ensimmäistä Nörttityttö-TV:n ohjelmaa eli taltioimme conista videoblogauksen. Sorry, Caprica is closed until further notice

Greetings from the very, very hot praeries of Idaho! USA is experiencing the hottest heatwave in ages and in some places they have reached temperatures higher than ever in their recorded history. Highways warping under the sun and all that. So far we have been lucky, but right now we are heading into the middle of the heatwave, expecting temperatures of over 100 F (37 C) and there are huge wildfires ranging here and there along the way, along with warnings of possible thunderstorms - meaning also the possibility of tornadoes. But this far we have been totally safe.

Victoria B.C. and Vancouver island

This week we visited Canada's Vancouver island and its most lovely city of Victoria, B.C.. This is where I have stayed earlier, meeting distant relatives, and thus the place is familiar to me. Last time I visited the place was in summer 1994 after my exchange student year in Alaska. Though the closest of those distant relatives has passed away and the house I used to stay in has been torn down, the downtown was still pretty much the same it used to be with its small, pictoresque streets and houses, and the huge Beacon Hill Park.

We left our car in Vancouver and took a ferry to Vancouver island and from there a bus to downtown Victoria, which took one hour. The downtown Victoria is so small you can easily walk around, so there was no need for a car. From our hotel, the James Bay Inn, following Government street it took us five minutes to walk to the Government building, Royal BC Museum, and the Empress hotel, which stands at the center of the harbour area. From there it takes ten minutes to Chinatown.

The most notable changes were that the old wax museum had had to close its doors two years earlier and the tallest totem pole in the world, if I remember correctly, wasn't anymore at the Beacon Hill park's viewpoint. Also there were lot more young people in the downtown and lots of bars, but still a very recognizable place.

Miniature World

This was one of the places which blew my mind when I was still a child. The Miniature world has a largecollection of huge miniature scenes from different events in history like certain battles during WWII and some old towns, like the old London Bridge scene from London. They also have some scenes from famous books and children's tales and a collection of old doll houses. There is also a dark room set up as a space station where you can see miniatures of imaginary space stations and of alien races from all over the universe. The room also houses some charmingly old computer graphics with VGA pixel graphics. Way too cool!

The best thing about this place are the rich scenes they have created with plenty of details to find from each scene. But unfortunately some of the miniatures are quite crude due to their old age, and could use some updating from more capable hands. And if you have kids, they will go berserk in this place when they get to push buttons which make trains and cable cars run. Also applies for big kidults like us.

Beacon Hill Park, Children's park, and Beacon Drive-In

Beacon Hill Park is the perfect place for a picnic and just hanging around in a park since it's so pretty and full of little interesting details. I'm not a flower person and usually find the outdoors a horrible place filled with bees and other critters trying to kill me. But this place has a certain appeal to me I can't describe. In my teens I found a tree with branches that formed a secret "room" beneath them, and someone had placed a park bench in there. I used to go to the nearby store, buy a can of soda and chips, and head there to read Bram Stoker's Dracula, hidden from everyone's view. The most perfect place! <3

A children's zoo can also be found within the park. There used to operate another zoo in the past with a rare white bear (called a spirit bear - not a snowbear nor an albino) and other animals, but it has long since shut down and the current, small zoo houses only small farm animals like pigs, bunnies and goats. ...And a bunch of peacocks, which roam semi-wild around and within the zoo. In the petting area with the miniature goats there were mainly just kids, but we, of course, went in to pet all the cute animals, some of which clearly enjoyed the constant massage.

And one of the mandatory stops has to be the Beacon Drive-In near next to the park next to Niagara street. They serve the largest sundaes I've ever seen! Can you just imagine anything better than eating a giant sundae in a pretty park and watch new ducklings swim in the pond next to you?

Royal BC Museum

I remember this museum especially well from my childhood. The best part of it were the exciting items from the past, like a chair made entirely out of bull horns and black leather. Now it was gone, but there was still the amazing indoors village with all the shops of the past - except for the "party planner" shops... But you can find a dressmaker's shop with old dresses and tools the tailor would use, and an old apothecary with medical instruments. The museum also holds a vast collection of native American items from the nearby tribes - and has also returned some of the artefacts to the tribes. Not many of them have asked for their return, though. The best part is, the nearby tribes have a very distinct artistic style, which I have always found extremely appealing and their totem poles and artwork is displayed all over Victoria and the museum.

When we visited the place, the museum also had an exhibition on dinosaurs, but just when we were about to move to that part of the museum the fire alarm went off and we were all thrown out. When they found out it was just a false alarm the museum was about to close, anyway. Well, dinosaurs you can see anywhere, genuine native American "First Peoples" artefacts you can't. :)

The "nerdtown" of Victoria, B.C.

There's a street which holds almost every nerd store in town. There are two old comic book stores selling also the latest issues, and next to them a store filled with new comics and roleplaying games, and across the street a Games Workshop store, and on the next block an old toys store, which has on display all these old He-Man action dolls and Transformers from the 1980s and even older Star Wars toys. Very cool! Very nerdy!

Vancouver, B.C.: Caprica is closed until further notice

For a long time many American movies and TV shows have been filmed in Canada and especially in the Vancouver area. It just happens that Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009) was filmed in Vancouver. Especially the scenes from Caprica, the planet the cylons bombed in the beginning of the series, were shot here. The BSG fans that we are, having just completed watching the series before the trip, we went searching

Our first stop was the "opera house" from Galactica situated right in downtown Vancouver. We googled and found out the building was open every now and then, since people had toured it and there were even tours arranged, but nowhere could we find any information on them. So we just drove over and hoped for the best. Well, we almost made it... but were one hour late. *fail* So in case someone should be wanting to go for the tours, below is a photograph from their front door with all the info about the tours they couldn't put on the internet. *not bitter or anything*

Our second stop was the bar where Helo and Sharon were hiding in Caprica from the cylons. The place is a popular, multiple times awarded bar in real life, but when we got there, it wasn't open yet. *sigh* But the place probably wouldn't look like in the TV show anyway from the inside. It's called the Alibi Room and located in the popular "Gaslight" district of Vancouver.

The third place we went to is called the Waterfall building in real life. The building is quite nice with a waterfall at its entrance, hence the name. The doctor who told president Roslin about her cancer, had his office inside the Waterfall Building's central courtyard's glass structure. Also I'm quite sure the distinctive stairways of the building were used in the episode where Boomer and Number Six met at Caprica and formed a friendship, and the rebels blew up the garage. There were a bunch of other scenes, as well, including Kara's apartment/jail cell. We saw the building just from the outside as it's an office building with private apartments.

The fourth place we visited made up for the disappointment of not being able to visit the opera house. If you ever get a chance you MUST visit the Simon Fraser University in Burnaby. It's located majestically on top of a mountain, with white-capped mountains surrounding it in all directions, and the architecture is out of this world. The main building is incredible! In fact, I'm quite sure the building has been used in some other scifi piece I've seen. Words are not enough, just watch these photos below! BTW, this architectural style is called "brutalist style". Fitting.
The building is used many times in the series, for example pretty much every time president Roslin sits next to the pool in Caprica.

The final place we visited was the old hospital, where the cylons did their experiments on Kara and the other human women. The building is in fact located inside a mental asylum but the building itself is out of use and only film crews use it these days. And as we approached the place there was some filming going on at the place, but luckily they were shooting at another part of the area. To find the building, just drive inside and turn right following the walls and you come straight in front of it. The first building on the left. Take notice, there are guards patrolling the area, so they will follow you and tell you photography is not allowed without permission, but as long as you just look around and appear trustworthy enough I suppose they let you be. We didn't go inside, though I suppose we could have, but we were in sort of hurry to leave the place and go across the border. ...to see the 4th of July fireworks, of course. Why, what did you think?

Bruce and Brandon Lee

Of course everyone knows who Bruce Lee is, but in case you're not familiar with his son, Brandon Lee followed in his father's footsteps and tragically died just when his Hollywood career was about to take off. Not before filming The Crow, though, which went on to have a huge effect on the goths of the Nineties - including us, very much so.

After our heroic escape from Canada we headed back to Seattle, WA, just in time to see the fireworks. And the next day we visited "the most haunted cemetery in the US", the Lakeview Cemetery, where Bruce and Brandon Lee are buried. That quote above is from a man who was doing maintenance on their graves with his colleague. The man was fixing the white lettering on Brandon's grave and his friend was putting on gold on Bruce's grave. When we asked him, he told us he had made Brandon's tombstone and explained what they were doing. They asked us to come back later for a distraction free photo opportunity, but we actually found this more interesting to capture. So thank you for allowing us to take photos of you two doing your work.

In case you want to visit the grave, they are very easy to find. Entering the cemetery from the entrance close to 1554 15th Ave E, you just follow the road until you get to a tree where the road splits and from there you should be able to see a big, white, marble heart shaped gravestone, straight ahead. Bruce and Brandon Lee are buried behind a hedge right behind the heart.

Twin Peaks is moving on...

After we headed east we visited two other towns famous from TV.

The first towns we stopped in were Snoqualmie and North Bend in Washington, which were used to shoot Twin Peaks. The Snoqualmie Falls is the waterfall seen in the opening titles, and right next to it lies the Great Northern Hotel, one of the main sets of the series. We took photos only from the outside as the interior has been modified since the series. But even if you are not a fan of Twin Peaks, you should go see the waterfall. The water running down the huge fall is quite scary. And the water rushes down with such immense force, it comes back to the viewer in a fine mist. You should see it yourself.

The second stop was of course at the famous Double R Diner which still serves its famous cherry pie and "damn fine cup of coffee". The place doesn't look the same anymore since it burned down after filming, but it's still recognizable. The lights on the ceiling and the exterior still looks the same, even though the place is run under a different name, Twede's Cafe. But for all the fans out there, either they don't make the pie like they used to or Dale Cooper really liked cherry pie made with canned filling. Ok, so do I, but I use a better brand filling than they do. But still, Twin Peaks diner! As far as food goes, the "Backfire" burger is the hottest we've encountered anywhere - so hot, in fact, Joonas couldn't finish it.

...but Cicely, AK, is still pretty much the same

How many of you still remember the hit show Northern Exposure (fin. "Villi Pohjola") from the Nineties? They show reruns of it every now and then so you might have seen it later. It's a story about a New Yorkian doctor Joel Fleischmann, who moves to the small town of Cicely in Alaska and meets all its residents, and you just fall in love with them.

Well, good news to all the fans. Cicely, Alaska, is located in Roslyn, Washington, and it looks exactly as it did in the show! Nothing has changed except the residents in the town, and outside the camera there is more town than what you see in the show. And in Dr. Fleischman's office there's now a shop selling all the Northern Exposure memorabilia you could need. They still often get fans of the series in the shop and love to talk about the series with them.
